Adders.....

So you maybe wondering why we are writing about adders... but you and your dog could be endanger on your walks here in the UK. So we are here to give you some top tips and hopefully everyone can enjoy a safe walk in nature.

HOW TO SPOT AN ADDER

Adders, the UK's only venomous snake, can be found in a variety of habitats across Britain, including: Heathland, moors, and coastal areas, Open woodland, Sea cliffs, Grasslands, and Sand dunes.

Adders are most easily spotted in the spring when they emerge from hibernation and bask in the sun. You can look for them in:

  • Open, sunny spaces

  • Thick vegetation

  • Dry patches of grass

  • Habitat edges

  • Transitional zones

Adders are relatively small, stocky snakes with the following characteristics:

  • Color: Grey-white in males, brown or copper in females

  • Pattern: A dark, zig-zag stripe down their back

  • Size: 60–80 cm long and 50–100 g

  • Eyes: Red

HOW TO KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE ON A WALK

Here are some tips to keep your dog safe from adders while walking:

  • Keep your dog on a leash: This is one of the best ways to protect your dog from snake bites.

  • Stick to footpaths: Adders generally avoid high-traffic areas.

  • Put a bell on your dog's collar: This will warn adders that your dog is approaching.

  • Be aware of when adders are active: Adders are most active from early spring to October, and are most likely to bite between April and July. They are especially active in the late afternoon, around 3 to 4 PM.

  • Know what to do if your dog is bitten: If your dog is bitten, the quicker they are treated, the better their chances of making a full recovery. If you are far from an emergency vet, your vet may recommend giving your dog an antihistamine like Piriton.

Adder venom can cause severe illness and even death, especially if your dog is bitten on the face or neck. So please contact your vet or the nearest vet if your dog is bitten.
